TikTok vs Reels vs Meta Feed: How to Adapt One Video Ad for Each

One great ad can run everywhere, but not unchanged. Here's how to adapt a video ad for TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook and Instagram feeds and YouTube: sizes, safe zones, length and style.

By the Sonny AI creative team October 6, 2026 4 min read

Make the 9:16 vertical version first; it covers TikTok, Reels, Stories and Shorts. Add 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds and 16:9 for YouTube. Keep text and faces out of the edges where platform buttons sit, burn in captions, and adjust the opening and pace to each platform's style.

You've made an ad that works. The tempting move is to upload the same file everywhere and call it done. Sometimes that works; often, the ad quietly underperforms because its captions are covered by buttons, its first second is cropped, or its pace feels wrong for the platform.

Adapting an ad isn't remaking it. It's a set of small, deliberate changes that let the same idea feel native in each place.

The quick spec sheet

Placement Ratio Typical size Sweet-spot length
TikTok in-feed 9:16 1080 × 1920 15 to 30 s
Instagram and Facebook Reels 9:16 1080 × 1920 15 to 30 s
Instagram and Facebook Stories 9:16 1080 × 1920 Under 15 s per card
Instagram and Facebook feed 1:1 or 4:5 1080 × 1080 or 1080 × 1350 15 to 30 s
YouTube Shorts 9:16 1080 × 1920 15 to 30 s
YouTube in-stream 16:9 1920 × 1080 15 to 30 s, skippable after 5 s

Platforms update their specs regularly, so check each platform's current ad guidelines before a big launch. The ratios above have been stable for years.

Safe zones: where not to put things

On vertical placements, the platform puts its own interface on top of your video: the caption and account name along the bottom, and like, comment and share buttons down the right side. Anything important in those areas gets covered.

  • Keep on-screen text and faces in the central area of the frame.
  • Leave roughly the bottom fifth and the right edge clear of key text.
  • Keep the very top clear too, where the platform shows its own labels.
  • Check one frame of every ad on your phone before launching. It takes a minute and catches most problems.

Platform by platform

TikTok

TikTok rewards ads that feel like TikToks: fast, personal, a bit raw, built around a person talking or a trend format. Open mid-action with text on screen, cut often, and use sound, because most TikTok users watch with audio on. A polished brand spot usually feels out of place here.

Instagram Reels

Similar to TikTok, with slightly more appetite for aesthetics: good light, clean product shots, satisfying visuals. The same 9:16 file usually works, but a slightly more polished hook can lift results.

Facebook and Instagram feeds

People scroll feeds faster and often without sound. Use a 1:1 or 4:5 crop, captions on every line, and the product or a face in the first frame. The first second has to work as a still image, because for many viewers that's all it is.

YouTube

For Shorts, reuse your vertical ad. For in-stream 16:9, the viewer can skip after five seconds, so state the benefit and show the product before then, and use the extra width for side-by-side comparisons or demos.

Captions and sound

  • Burn in captions. Auto-captions vary by platform and can be switched off. Burned-in captions always show.
  • Write for sound-off. The ad should make sense on mute, through text and visuals.
  • Mix for sound-on. Clear voice, music under it, consistent loudness across your ads so none sounds weak next to the others.
  • Use licensed music. Trending sounds in organic posts aren't always cleared for ads. Use music you have rights to.

Adapting without losing the idea

The angle and the hook stay the same. What changes:

  • The crop, reframed so the product and face stay centered, rather than just cut off.
  • Text position, moved inside each format's safe area.
  • Length: a tighter 15-second cut for Stories, the full version for Reels and TikTok.
  • The opening frame, chosen so it works as a still image in feeds.

Each adapted version also counts as fresh creative for the algorithm, which helps against creative fatigue.

How Sonny delivers multi-platform ads

Every Sonny AI ad is delivered in 9:16 at 1080 × 1920, with burned-in captions placed inside platform safe zones, voiceover and music mixed to consistent loudness, and files that play everywhere. Growth sets also include 1:1 and 16:9 versions, reframed rather than simply cropped, so one set covers TikTok, Reels, Stories, Facebook and Instagram feeds and YouTube.
